Why Should You Care?

Purnell Road has become an all-too convenient shortcut between Route 59 and Winfield Road. We likely can all agree that cars frequently far exceed the posted speed limit. Traffic attempting to turn right onto Winfield Road from Purnell is regularly backed up a half mile or more during peak hours.

It has also become increasingly dangerous when traveling north on Winfield Road and trying to turn left onto Purnell. Cars are frequently backed up in the lane of traffic before Mack Road as vehicles wait in the left turn lane to turn onto Purnell.

Traffic also backs up along Garys Mill Road as vehicles wait to turn left onto Route 59. Since there aren’t defined right and left turn lanes on Garys Mill at this intersection, vehicles that would otherwise turn right onto Route 59 fairly easily frequently queue on Garys Mill waiting for vehicles to turn left onto Route 59.

Traffic is also likely to increase through Phase I of Woods of Cantigny along South Cantigny Drive, as motorists increasingly look to circumvent the backups that will take place along Purnell Road.

Traveling via Purnell Road has not only become time consuming and inconvenient – it is flat out dangerous. The concern is that this development will make it even more so.

Another reason to be concerned about the Planter’s Palette development is its implications for development of the even larger parcel for sale just east of Woods of Cantigny Phase I (the cornfield currently listed for sale). Anyone interested in purchasing that parcel for development will consider the ease or difficulty experienced by Pulte with the zoning for Trillium Farms. The easier it is, the more likely that site will quickly be developed as well. And this would be another development that will have ingress/egress exclusively via Purnell Road, exacerbating the problem even further.
